The budget and splitting costs
Record who paid for what, see each person's share and who owes whom, and see the whole trip in one currency.
Updated October 18, 2026
Click Budget at the top of the trip page. Anyone who can see the trip can read it; editors add and change costs.
Adding a cost
You need editor access.
- Under Add a cost, fill in what it was, the category, the Amount and its Currency (as paid: EUR in Munich, GBP in London).
- Pick the Date, who Paid by, and who it's Split between. Leave Split between empty to split it between everyone on the trip.
- Click Add cost.
Costs are split equally. If a cost doesn't divide exactly, the odd cents go to whoever paid.
Who owes whom
For each currency, the budget shows the total, what each person paid, their share and their balance (green: they're owed; red: they owe), and Settle up: the fewest payments that square everyone.
Totals in one currency
A trip in several countries ends up with costs in several currencies. Show totals in (above the totals) converts every cost into one currency, at the exchange rate for the day it was spent, and shows:
- ≈ Total for all costs, with Rates used (for example "1 EUR = 1.08 USD (ECB, Sep 17)");
- the converted amount (≈ USD 108.00) under each cost.
The rates are the European Central Bank's daily reference rates. A cost dated after the latest rate (or with no date) uses the latest one, marked (latest). A cost in a currency the bank doesn't publish is listed as Not converted and left out of the total, never guessed.
Settle up stays in each currency, since that's how the money was actually spent. Tick Settle in USD (or whichever currency you chose) to settle everything in that one currency at those rates instead.
Your own exchange rate
If you changed money at a known rate and want the budget to use it: on Edit trip, under Exchange rates, add a row such as "1 EUR is worth 1.09 USD" and save. That rate is used for this trip, both ways, instead of the bank's.
Estimated trip cost
The trip page's Overview shows Estimated trip cost: the costs entered on confirmations and the estimated costs of activities, added up in your currency (set under Settings). It's an estimate of what's booked, separate from the costs recorded in the budget.
Problems
| Problem | What to do |
|---|---|
| "Not converted (no rate)" | The currency has no ECB rate. Add your own on Edit trip under Exchange rates. |
| A total looks off by a little | Each cost uses its own day's rate, so the same amount on different days converts differently. |
| No Add a cost form | Only editors add costs. |
