Ideas and goals on a trip

Keep things to fit in on a trip's Ideas shelf, vote on them, put them on a day or make them an option, and see whose bucket-list goals they are.

Updated October 27, 2026

Not everything you'd like to do on a trip has a day yet. The trip's Ideas shelf holds those things: "Day trip to Salzburg", "Augustiner Keller", "Oktoberfest 2027". Everyone on the trip sees the shelf and can vote; editors move ideas onto the days.

The Ideas shelf

On the trip page, Ideas is the fold after About this trip, with how many are waiting ("Ideas · 7"). Each idea shows:

  • what it is, and a link to the catalogue place, activity, event or city it's about, when it has one;
  • its notes, who added it, and whose bucket-list goal it is ("🎯 Debbie's goal") when it came from one;
  • 👍 and how many people voted for it, with their names.

An idea leaves the shelf once it's on a day or in an option. The shared read-only link never shows ideas.

Adding ideas

Anyone who can comment on the trip can add ideas (who can do what):

  • Type one at the bottom of the shelf, choose what kind of thing it is if you know (something to do, somewhere to eat, a stay, travel), and click Add idea.
  • From the catalogue: on a place, activity, event or city page, click Add to a trip and pick one of your trips (places and events). It goes on that trip's shelf, linked to the catalogue page. Adding the same thing twice keeps one idea.
  • From your bucket list: putting a goal on a trip makes it an idea there (see below).

Click Edit on an idea you added to change it or remove it. Editors can change or remove any idea.

Voting

Click 👍 on an idea you'd like to do. Click it again to take your vote back. A bucket-list goal on an idea counts as its owner's vote.

Putting an idea on a day

Editors choose a day and what it becomes, then click Put on this day. The kind starts as the idea's own, or as the catalogue item suggests: an activity or event is something to do, a Food & drink place somewhere to eat. The new item opens so you can add its time and details:

It becomes Filled in from the idea
Do (an activity) the title, notes, the catalogue place (or the activity's or event's venue) and the event
Eat (a meal) the name, notes and the catalogue place
Stay the name and city, from the day it starts
Travel (a journey) a planned journey to the idea's city
Note the title and notes, linked to the catalogue item

The place's city joins the trip's cities. Delete the item later and the idea goes back on the shelf.

Making an idea an option

When you haven't decided yet, choose Option of "Afternoon" (Day 4) for an undecided choice, or New choice on Day 4, and click Add as an option. The idea becomes an option travellers can vote on (choices, options and votes); an idea linked to the catalogue also brings its item into the option. Delete the option, or the choice, and the idea goes back on the shelf.

Bucket-list goals

When you put a goal on a trip (Plan a trip or Add to this trip on the goal, or Add one of your bucket-list goals on the shelf), it becomes an idea on the trip's shelf, linked to the same catalogue item as the goal. Your personal notes stay private: only the goal's title and catalogue link are copied. If someone else's goal is about the same thing, you share one idea and it shows both: "Debbie's and your goals".

If you can only read the trip, the goal is linked to the trip but no idea is added.

When the trip is over, Tick it off offers the goals whose idea made it onto the trip: put on a day, or in an option that was picked or taken in a split. Goals still on the shelf, or in an option nobody took, aren't offered.

Save for someday

Save for someday on an idea, or on an option under Considered, adds it to your own bucket list for another time: the catalogue item it's about, else its title. If it's already on your list, it says so and adds nothing.

On the map

The trip's Map (the top of the page) has an Ideas switch, off at first: it shows ideas on the shelf that have a place as faint pins.
